Hey y’all!
I’m Laura, and as you can tell from my use of y’all, I live in the South. But I’ll always be a Midwesterner at heart!
Early in life, I was told there was a ladder to climb to achieve my dreams. I wasn’t told what ladder, where it was, or even where it was going, but I was assured that there indeed was a ladder; I just had to find it.
Eventually, I found one and started climbing.
I took the “right” steps, went to college, majored in a degree that would lead to a good salary, and landed a corporate job in the big city.
But it didn’t feel right. Yet, I didn’t know how to change course.
Then, I became a mom, and life changed course for me.
Those first few years of motherhood were the most challenging and transformative years of my life.
Motherhood opened my eyes to the hypocrisy of society’s treatment of moms (warning: this is where I get riled up!)
On one hand, society touts motherhood as the most important job in the world, but it is not treated as such when we look to return to the workforce.
Wtf?! It’s so incredibly frustrating.
That’s when I decided to put my HR knowledge, years of teaching, and my own experience of pivoting careers to use for other moms.
My goal is to take the daunting process of returning to the workplace and break it down into manageable action steps that leave you with a “heck yeah, I’m going to go out there and get what I am worth” mentality.
Now that you know my “why”, here are some other pertinent facts about me!
1. I lived out my childhood dream of saying, “Pat, I’d like to solve the puzzle” on WOF (pre-Ryan Seacrest days!)
2. I’ve never once been able to see the image in those Magic Eye books.
3. I am afraid of all bugs except rollie pollies.
4. No matter where I live, I will always be a die-hard Detroit sports fan – Go Lions!
I know a lot is competing for your reading attention, so thanks for taking the time to read this far! As a reward, I’ll leave you with one more parting tidbit.
My life motto, which is actually just a line from an Anberlin song, is one I lean into whenever I have a life decision to make.
Never let your fear decide your fate.
